“Effective Approaches to Children with Developmental Differences”

with Jeanine K. Fitzgerald

Many resources are available for working with and supporting the children who thrive within the traditional system and follow the expected developmental milestones. But what about those children who are not? This session examines a comprehensive survey of common diagnoses and provides comprehensive approaches that offer hope to those who appear to be unreachable. The information is delivered in plain language so you can lead your most frustrated and misunderstood children toward significance and success.

Course Objectives: At the completion of the two sessions, the participants will be able to:

  1. Define the essential features of each variation in development outlined below
  2. Identify proven and effective approaches for each variation of development outlined below
  3. Partner with parents and colleagues in ways that capitalize on collective wisdom and align practices

Course Outline:

Each segment will follow the same pattern, which consists of:

  • An introduction of each identified developmental variation (definition, prevalence, etiology, developmental progression, etc.)
  • An explanation of best practices and evidence based approaches
  • Case studies that provide evidence of application of the approaches
  • Designing home plans

“Language Acquisition and Development in Infants and Toddlers”

with Claudine Campinelli

The aim of the two day seminar is for Montessori teachers working with infant and toddlers to gain a full understanding of language acquisition and how as a teacher we can impact this development. The course will begin with the basic understanding of brain development, both normal and deviations and the impact it has on language.

We will also discuss the many external factors that contribute to language development such as the physical components of speaking and hearing, the type and amount of stimuli provided, socio-economic status, home and school environments and including the impact of the teacher’s movements and gestures.

Later in the seminar we will move to understanding the importance of both teacher and classroom preparation to provide the best language learning environment. This will include a review of classroom layouts, working with assistants and co-teachers, the attributes of ideal language materials and how to create these for the classroom. A discussion, demonstration and practice of the three-period lesson for infants and toddlers will occur.

The course will also provide a critical review of seminal and current research that supports the work of the teacher in their work of guiding the child through language acquisition in these early years. If time allows we will discuss the current initiatives in the United States promoting the importance of quality language experiences for young children.
